I’m pretty sure its a crab but how do i know for sure?
To answer that question better I’d need to know why you feel a crab might be your familiar, it’s certainly rare.
There are two types of familiar, an animal and one created on the astral plane.
Nightwind is right in that they are more normally associated with traditional witchcraft, but one of the founder members of Wicca (Doreen Valiente) had one that was named Old Hob, so it’s not unknown within wicca.
A familiar has several purposes, one of the main ones is aiding the Witch in magical workings, by this I don’t mean a cat slinking into the circle and rubbing up against a Book of shadows or anything ‘mundane’, I mean really working with you. They are connected with you on the Astral plane and would, for instance, journey with you in any meditations, they would make themselves known in the natural world to guide you, they would be around you in all kinds of ways. So you see what I mean by needing to know more about why you feel Crab is your familiar? I’m not saying it can’t be (especially if you live near the sea) just more info is needed for a sensible answer to your query.
Familiars as part of Traditional Witchcraft are rare, even amongst trad witches, and they are normally of the world around the witch (so for instance it would be rare for a british witch to have something like a black leopard (since we don’t have black leopards loose in the landscape here) but a black cat would be much more likely – someone landlocked would not have a dolphin – you see how it goes?)
Totem animals are another matter, they are animal spirits that work with you, and you most often find them on the astral plane although on the physical is usual too. They are animals that have ‘power’ or a meaning and from them you learn about yourself, what you need to overcome, what qualities of the animal you should pay attention to.
Familiars are connected to you in ways that totems are not, totems can come and go, some we keep for all our lives and some only turn up when you need them and leave when you have fulfilled whatever it is you are meant to do or learn from them. Often people do get the two muddled – that is very common.
So to clarify
Totems are helping spirits and will come and go
Familiars are far more than just ‘helpers’
Familiars on the spirit plane (astral) can be created, and would be used for such things as guarding a property or magical workings.
