Thoroughbreds Point Given Best Pal Azeri Voted To Hall Of Fame
Azeri, foaled in 1998 from the pairing of Jade Hunter–Zodiac Miss (AUS), by Ahonoora, distinguished herself exclusively on the Thoroughbred track by winning the Older Female Championship 3 years in a row, 2002-’04. She was no much less formidable in her election to the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame, gaining entrance on her very first ballot.
The 2010 election also recognized 2001 Horse of the Year Point Given, and grade 1 winner and 1-time California leading earner Best Pal.
Azeri’s Particular Location in History
Few females have won an outright Horse of the Year Eclipse Award. Azeri did that in 2002, the very first since Secretariat’s Lady’s Secret in 1986. Azeri was also the Older Female Champion of 2002, and she kept that going for the subsequent two years.
The only Thoroughbred in record-keeping history to win extra consecutive championships than Azeri in any Eclipse Award category was Forego. He won Older Male Champion from 1974 by means of 1977 and 3 straight Horse of the Year awards, 1974-’06.
Azeri’s Racing Record
Azeri’s 4-year-old campaign was her most notable, when she won eight of nine starts, like the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Her five-length win gave her Horse of the Year status. In 2004 she raced from the barn of Hall of Fame conditioner D.Wayne Lukas, who leads all trainers in classic victories and Breeders’ Cup wins.
In all, Azeri won 17 of 24 begins, with 4 seconds. The chestnut mare won 11 grade 1 races, earned $four,079,820, and retired as the leading North American female earner.
Allen E. Paulson (Allen E. Paulson Living Trust) bred and campaigned Azeri. Her very first trainer was Laura de Seroux.
Among Azeri’s other notable wins had been three victories in the Apple Blossom Handicap and two triumphs each and every in the Milady Breeders’ Cup and the Clement L. Hirsch and Bathroom vanitiesom vanities Handicaps.
Ideal Pal Raced Seven Years
A gelding son of Habitony–Ubestshedid, by King Pellinore, Best Pal is described by the son of his owners as "a big, tough, ugly son of a gun…mean and ornery you didn’t turn your back on him" but "…he was there to win each time he could".
The paradoxically named Greatest Pal turned in seven years of workmanlike performances on the track, earning $five,668,245 in 18 wins, 11 seconds, and 4 thirds from 47 begins.
He scored in the 1990 Hollywood Futurity (G1) and the Norfolk Stakes (G1) the 1991 Pacific Classic Stakes the 1992 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), Oaklawn Handicap (G1), and Charles F. Strub Stakes (G1) and the 1993 Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap (G1).
Ideal Pal was bred and owned by the Golden Eagle Farm of John and Betty Mabee of Ramona, California. His trainers included Ian Jory, Gary Jones, and Richard Mandella.
Retired in 1996 at age eight, Finest Pal succumbed two years later to a heart attack suffered in the course of a workout at Golden Eagle Farm. "…he was carrying out what he liked to do," Larry Mabee commented.
Point Given Amongst Classic Ideal
He was supposed to be the 2001 Triple Crown Champion, but Point Given got to the line fifth in the Kentucky Derby. On the other hand, the chestnut son of Thunder Gulch–Turko’s Turn, by Turkoman rebounded in the Preakness Stakes, the Belmont Stakes, the Haskell Invitational Handicap and the Travers Stakes. Just before the Kentucky Derby, he won the Santa Anita Derby and the San Felipe Stakes (G2).
In the Belmont, he romped as few have accomplished prior to him, earning a 12-1/four length victory. His record, brief but highly sweet, was much more than enough to earn him the Horse of the Year Eclipse in 2001, as effectively as the Champion Three-Year-Old Male title.
Bred and owned by The Thoroughbred Corporation (of Kentucky), Point Given was trained by Bob Baffert and won nine of 13 lifetime begins. He also produced three seconds while earning $3,968,500.
Baffert still speaks of Point Given as "among the most beneficial racehorses I ever trained". Point Given was retired after his final two wins, having battled a tendon injury.

Long Voyage Home [VHS] $7.73 Eugene O’Neill loved this feature-length adaptation of his one-act sea plays, with intelligent bridging material written by Dudley Nichols and a final movement, both hellish and elegiac, appropriate to the onset of World War II. John Ford directed, in his more self-consciously arty vein (à la The Informer) but with no loss of power or passion. It’s entirely fitting that the director shared his… |
