A Novice’s Guide to Starting a Jazz Band
If, as a teenager, one is interested in starting a jazz band, then the first and the foremost requirement is that the person should start religiously listening to jazz music and learn to completely appreciate the peculiar intricacies associated with it. One has to listen to the nuances of the various instruments that are commonly played in a jazz band such as the bass guitar and electric guitar and learn and try to identify the differences in the music produced by the different types of guitars in use. After getting to know the various instruments that are being played in a jazz band, one can take this a step further and start listening to the various jazz bands that are playing locally. By listening to jazz bands at local churches, one can come to know about the types of scales that are being used during the jazz performances.
Before even beginning to think about forming a jazz group, the individual has to identify their strengths and try to improve in the area in which they are interested. If one has a potential skill or interest in playing guitar or trumpet, then they can try to develop their skills in playing those instruments. When planning a jazz band, one of the important aspects to consider is whether to have a singer or not. There are different types of jazz bands that are available to perform – with singers or without. One could analyze the current trend and take a decision based on that. Most of the small jazz bands are purely instrumental and doesn’t have a vocalist as part of the band. Hence during the initial stages of a jazz band formation, it is sometimes better to have purely instrumental players.
The next step is to bring on board a piano player and a drummer. Both these players are very important for the success of the jazz band and hence one has to be careful when choosing these players. The piano player should be able to hit all the right notes and the drummer should be capable of adjusting to complex beats. Additional players who may join the band include trumpet players and saxophone players. A saxophone player can be a very important member of the group, but ultimately it is the ability of a jazz band to play within a standard format while putting their own spin on it which can interest the audience.
