The History Of Coffee Makers: Five Of The Top Highlights

The coffeemaker went through a long evolutionary process. First came the vacuum, then the percolator, and finally the drip coffeemaker.

Keurig K-Cups and other similar coffee makers have consistently remained a necessity in homes and restaurants around the world. This is especially true in today’s times when a lot of people want a caffeine boost before they go about their daily activities. Here is the story on how coffeemakers were created:

The goal when coffee makers were invented was to simplify the process of preparing coffee

The coffeemaker was invented to simplify the process of brewing coffee. Before, coffee making was a somewhat complicated process that involved several utensils. The coffeemaker made making coffee much simpler. Several models were invented under this principle, including the vacuum, percolator and drip coffeemakers. Although these models are all made for the purpose of making coffee, they essentially use somewhat different processes.

Vacuum coffeemakers date back to the 1840s

Even though people have been drinking coffee for many years, the first coffee maker was not invented until the mid 1800?s. Sometime in the 1840s, vacuum brewers made their debut. A tube attaches the two different resevoirs in this product. The H2O is boiled in one chamber before traveling to another chamber to brew the coffee. When the reservoir empties, the pot is removed from the element. This sucks the coffee into the reservoir.

In the 19th century the first percolator was patented

First came the percolator in the 19th century. The same technology was later used to invent the drip coffee maker. It works by passing boiled water through a strainer which contains the coffee grounds. Usually, this process is repeated until the coffee is made.

In the 1960?s, the drip brewer became commercially available

The majority of American homes use the drip model, one of the most popular models. About 50 years ago this model was introduced to the market. A drip brewer functions by warming water until it is almost boiling and makes bubbles. The bubbles make the heated water pass through a tube so as to enter a second reservoir where brewing of coffee grounds are done. Then the coffee, which is the finished product, is dripped into the pot.

The drip brewer underwent several improvements years after its introduction

Since its introduction to the market, the drip brewer has since undergone several improvements. Drip coffee brewer capabilities further progressed in 1979 with the introduction of configured timers. As the drink can be made automatically it allows for more ease and convenience in the preparation of coffee. Then, in 1989, a 4 cup coffee maker was introduced. The selection of various sizes for their coffee drinks was made feasible for the coffee drinkers through this method. The Keurig K-Cups are the newest development in coffeemaker technology, which brew single cups of coffee for individual consumption.

The continuous evolution of coffeemakers is testament to people’s love for coffee and their need for convenience.
