How to design to new high voltage cable joint?
What factors would be considered in the design of a new high voltage cable joint?
Here is what I would consider if I was buying one:
Where it is installed (underground, suspended, in a cable trench etc)
How many phases – cores of cable will be joined
Voltage
The type of cable to join
The size of cable to join
Straight joint, single cables, ‘t’ joint
Insulating material
Then my jointers want to know the mechanics of it – how the mechanical connection is made, the jointing compound (2 part etc – how easy it is), dimensions and weight
So to design a new joint you really have to specify what it will join and where the joint will be. This will give you the other requirements such as strength. After that you are looking at making it easy to use with a long lifespan
