Old Rice Plantations And Modern Golf Courses Collide In South Carolina

If you are heading for a vacation in Myrtle Beach or Charleston, South Carolina, a great spot to go to is Hopsewee Plantation. This previous rice plantation is now a national historic landmark, & rests precisely in between the two coastal cities of Charleston and Myrtle Beach. The home is more than 270 years old, but since it has merely seen 5 different families, continues to be more than properly maintained. It sits, preserved amongst the old Oaks in addition to cattails, under the brilliant blue skies of the southeast, & reminds us of what used to be Lowcountry life.

The Hopsewee plantation was constructed in 1733 by Thomas Lynch. Mr. Lynch & his wife Elizabeth kept the residence until 1762, after they sold the home to a person by the name of Robert Hume.

The Hume family lived in the residence for almost 100 years, until the mid-1850s. When the family finally left the home in 1853, they hired a contractor to keep rice production on the property. At the time when the Civil War hit, loads of southern estates were attacked, the Hopsewee Plantation being among them. In 1861, the home was raided by the North, and rice production was shut down. After the war, in 1900, the Hume family finally came back to the home & stayed until 1945, whereupon they sold it to the International Paper Company.

Two years later, the plantation house and some surrounding acres were sold to a person by the name of Reading Wilkinson. He along with his wife started modernizing the home. They built kitchen cabinets out of timber from within attic plus added two bathrooms

to the upstairs. In 1969, the widowed Mrs. Wilkinson traded her home with a couple, Jim & Helen Maynard.

The Maynards then obtained National Historic Landmark Status of the property in 1972. They then opened the home as a museum. The Hopsewee Plantation was then sold to the final family, Frank and Raejean Beattie, aided by the comprehension that the property would never be sold for development. Since the buy, the Beatties have acquired other surrounding land, as well as the home at present rests on seventy acres of the original Hopsewee property.

Excursions are available to guests. They run on the hour, beginning Tuesday throughout Saturday. You could perhaps call & schedule an appointment. Besides touring the home, you are able to observe the neighboring teahouse & tour the premises. In case you are inquisitive about going to or planning a personal occasion within the confines of this beautiful, historic plantation house, look for info on their site. During the time you are in the proximity of Hopsewee Plantation, don’t forget to keep in mind that there certainly are many alternatives for sleeping and relaxation, including hotels, chain motels, B&B’s as well as Bluegreen resort choices, available from Bluegreen.
