Try Chicken Soup For A Cold
Grandmother was right. Chicken soup is one of the best treatments for the common cold. There is something about chicken broth that holds heat better than normal water. The broth also helps to keep you hydrated which is another key to healing.
One of the best recipes for chicken soup uses roasted chicken. You can use leftover chicken from the bird you roasted last night in your trusty kitchenaid oven or pick up a chicken that has been cooked in a rotisserie oven at the local grocery store. You will need about three cups of cubed chicken.
While you can buy a soup base that has already been prepared, it is easy to make your own. After removing the meat from the chicken, throw the carcass in a crock pot with a few vegetables and allow to cook overnight. Drain the stock for making your chicken soup and discard all the bones and cooked vegetables. This makes a great base for a home made chicken soup.
You will then add the cubed chicken to the stock and more chopped vegetables. If you have your black decker food processor, you will find the task of chopping vegetables much easier.
Of course any good chicken soup has pasta. The problem of pasta in soup is that it continues to absorb water from the soup and even small pieces of pasta eventually get large and mushy. To avoid this, cook the past on the side and add to each bowl just before serving. This trick woks especially well if you intend to freeze the chicken soup.
There are several advantages to making your own soup over purchasing prepared soup. First, you are able to control the sodium content of your soup. Canned chicken soup is very high in sodium and if you are trying to limit your consumption of salt, making your own soup is a better choice.
In addition, by making your own soup, you are able to load the soup with fresh vegetables to increase the nutritional content of this very good food.
Whenever you feel a cold starting, head home and prepare a big pot of your own chicken soup. It will keep in the refrigerator for several days and can also be frozen. When you do not feel like doing anything else, cuddle up in your blanket with a hot cup of soup and watch your favorite movies.
