Tips to Get Started Scrapbooking with Kids
Do you think your kids would enjoy scrapbooking? I know of many moms who do scrapbooking. I wonder if all those croppin’ moms ever tried scrapbooking with their children? Having a fun activity all planned out for kids (to get them away from the TV or video games for a while) can be difficult! It’s so important to provide a time for them to learn something creative – once kids get started painting, drawing or scrapbooking they usually love it.
If you’ve never tried scrapbooking with your kids, here are some tips.
Make sure you have enough of the basic scrapbook supplies for everyone – glue, paper, scissors, and albums. There are lots of themed scrapbook albums for kids. You could find an album for each child (there are sports scrapbook albums, Disney scrapbook albums, and scrapbook kits for kids have similar themes to use for ideas. Or, you can find a large album for the entire family to contribute pages to. Mini-scrapbook albums are another option to use for your kid’s scrapbook activity.
You may need to sort through which of your scrapbook supplies and materials you want to use for the activity. Depending upon the ages of the children involved, you might limit their use of your specialty papers or more expensive scrapbooking materials. Some moms just make all their supplies available. You know your kids’ interests and abilities and which of your materials you should use.
Children’s Scrapbooking Activity Time Tips:
Tip 1: Have Fun
This is your opportunity to share your enthusiasm for making scrapbooks with the kids. They don’t have to be great artists or make things look perfect. Allow for them to come up with their own ideas to help develop their creativity.
Tip 2: Scrapbooking Tools and Materials
Supervise the use of any sharp tools or remove the ones that are dangerous from the available supplies. Explain how any special scrapbooking tools you have work – such as punches – and show the kids how to use glue or glue dots.
Tip 3: Get Organized before You Start
Prepare for the activity by sorting out your art, craft and scrapbook supplies. It will really help if you use storage containers or organizer trays to keep all the supplies easy-to-find (such as your stickers, pens and glue).
Tip 4: Photos for the Scrapbook
Print out a selection of photos that can be used for the scrapbook. Having extra prints of photographs (so you can save a copy for your own scrapbooking) is a good idea.
Tip 5: Stickers, Rub-ons and Embellishments
Demonstrate and explain how you use your stickers, rubber stamps, rub ons and other scrapbooking materials. You may even want to buy some scrapbook kits with specific artistic themes (holidays, birthdays, pets, boy themes or girl themes) for them to use.
Tip 6: Writing and Journaling
Show the kids how to write their own notes or captions (introduce them to journaling). Having some colorful pens to use can make this even more fun. If your child likes drawing, they can make some sketchs or drawings for the pages. Make sure you have them create a page with their name, the date and other personal information. When they look at the scrapbook in later years, knowing what they did at different ages will become of more interest to them.
Tip 7: Set Some Activity Time Rules
Don’t let them eat or drink anything until AFTER they are done. Food and drinks could ruin your expensive collection of supplies.
If you have teenagers who love computers, think about having them learn about digital scrapbooking – they may like computer scrapbooking as much or more than playing those video games!
Helping your kids to learn to scrapbook will do more than filling time with an activity – they’ll learn about their own creativity and how much fun being creative can be. You never know – your kids may decide scrapbooking is their favorite hobby!
