Greek Folk

Which Greek folk, popular, or modern song best represents the Greek spirit and culture?
I can’t wait to see the responses!!!! And please include your interpretation or reason for the choice.
Im kinda partial to Theodorakis “Ena to Helidoni”
The answer is Never on Sunday sung by Melina Mercouri in the 1958 movie of the same name. Here’s why….
To answer this question requires an exploration of Greek Culture before 1967, between 1967 and 1974 and after 1974.
Clearly, Mikis Theodorakis and George Dalaras have collaborated on many songs reflecting the glory of Greece past, present and future.
Before 1967, the rembetes sang their songs of pain, sadness and toughness, mainly under the influence of heroin (we’re talking 20′s and 30′s – not afterward). After WW II, moden singers like Kazantzidis and others rejuvenated the rembetes to a generation which never knew them. The song, “Never on Sunday” reflects the Greek spirit to work hard 6 days a week and rest on the 7th. The Zembekiko in Zorba the Greek also reflects a man’s desire to rest and enjoy life – not be stuck in books and theories all day.
Between 1967 and 1974, most of Greek culture went to Europe to escape the junta. Many singers continued producing music overseas – some had successful careers in America and Canada.
After 1974, the “modern” age of Greek music came upon the scene where many singers sang about the beauty of Greece -Haris Alexiou, Ioannis Parios and others released hit after hit – mainly for the Diaspora.
Now, there is also the folk music element which still resonates among Greeks from different parts of the nation – whether Islander, mainlander or mountaineer. The Tsamiko, especially the song Enas Aetos (One Eagle) is still considered the national folk dance of Greece, reflecting the victory Greece acheieved over the Ottoman Turks. As Greece is integrated into the Euro system, artists like Eleni Paparizou and other young stars (their names evade me simply because I do not follow them) have expressed a more modern hope of Greece. Most of these new singers are heavily influenced by American and International performers like Jay-Z, Diddy, Beyonce, Shakira and so on.
