Is my daughter old enough to get a hamster?
My princess is 6 and she is super independent and smart. I am willing to help her, but I’m afraid of her or myself getting bit. Do they bite? Also do they get out of their cages easily? Any other info you think I should have please share. Also if you suggest another pet let me know, but no cats, dogs, or reptiles please

Get a gerbil (or two..or three..or four..)! Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. You see, even though they can be a bit jumpy and hyper, they are really cute and fun to play with. Also, they NEVER bite, like hamsters do. Here are just a few things you can do w/ your gerbils**:
*Sit in an EMPTY bathtub, and put the gerbils in. They will run all over you, and get some exercise.
*If you have a fruit tree in your backyard, you can give the gerbils a branch to chew on and climb.
*Using wooden blocks, you can make a maze, put all of the gerbils in, and time them to see which one gets out first, and how long it took.
*If you can get a few other people, you guys can all sit down w/ your legs apart, and put your feet together so that there are no gaps. Then, put the gerbils inside, and watch as they run around.
*If you have a worn-out sofa that you don’t mind your gerbils going on, you can sit down on the sofa, and put the gerbils on it. They will weave in and out of the cushions, but don’t worry-they won’t rip it up. WARNING: If yo do this, be careful not to shift your weight if you are sitting down. You don’t want to squish the little things! Also, if one of them seems to be missing, get your butt offa that sofa and start looking in it;the little thing could be stuck. For this reason, I advise you to do this specific activity ONE GERBIL AT A TIME so that you will know at all times where it is.
*You might know this already, but you can actually make a tunneling system for your gerbils. What you do is that you take around 6 or 7 toilet paper and/or paper towel rolls, and tape them together however you like. Remember that there shouldn’t be any dead ends, so you may be required to cut a couple of holes so they all connect. When you are finished w/ your structure, bury it UNDER the shavings/bedding, and then put more shavings on top of that. However, leaves the openings exposed, so the gerbils will see them (duh). The reason you bury it is that it will seem like it is actually underground, but when you think about it, it technically is.
**Remember that with ALL of these activities, you must close the door in case a gerbil runs away unexpectedly!!!
