Nineteen Eighty-4 &ndash George Orwell
This is a dystopian novel of a world controlled by totalitarian leaders. The Party prohibit zero cost speech, free of charge thoughts and any expressions of individuality, and monitor this via telescreens that spy on the population. Intellectual protagonist Winston Smith functions for the Ministry of Truth in the records department, rewriting history to suit the desires of the Party. Winston rebels against the party and falls in enjoy, only to be imprisoned, tortured and re-educated.
On The Road &ndash Jack Kerouac
A defining book of the Beat Generation, On The Road is Kerouac’s well-known novel of American counterculture. Written in what is recognized as spontaneous prose, the novel is partly autobiographical and depicts Kerouac’s spontaneous travels across America. On The Road has inspired numerous writers and musicians, such as Bob Dylan and Jim Morrison.
The Catcher in the Rye &ndash JD Salinger
Once banned in a lot of schools and libraries across America for use of swearing and sexual references, Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye tells the story of adolescent Holden Caulfield and his experiences in New York after he has been expelled from school. The novel is preferred with teenagers for its themes of angst and identity.
Flowers for Algernon &ndash Daniel Keyes
Mentally disabled Charlie Gordon has a low IQ and functions a menial job rather than be sent to an institution. He is picked for an experiment by researchers who have been practising experimental methods on a mouse, Algernon, and have managed to increase his intelligence. As Charlie’s intelligence increases, his life becomes even more complicated as his relationships with others break down. After Algernon unexpectedly dies, Charlie knows that he will revert back to his old self. Not wanting to be about consumers pitying him, he puts himself into a dwelling. The novel deals with the therapy of the mentally ill.
Lord of the Flies &ndash William Golding
The novel follows a group of young schoolboys who are deserted on an island right after their plane crashes with no adult survivors. At 1st the young children perform together producing shelters and gathering food. In a place with no guidance or guidelines the young children turn out to be like savages, brutal and primitive. The novel examines their loss of innocence and the darkness that lives inside humans.
The Image of Dorian Grey &ndash Oscar Wilde
Wealthy and attractive Dorian Grey curses a painting of himself, believing that as his beauty fades the painting will only remind him of the beneficial looks he has lost. He wishes to swap with the painting so that he can stay youthful forever. As Dorian descends into a selfish planet of hedonism and contemporary bathroom vanitiesporary bathroom vanities, his painting mirrors his soul and starts to change. Although Dorian stays amazing, each sin he commits disfigures his picture and shows what each cruel action does to the soul.
