Geezervey: Were the British Invasion bands really that great?
The Beatles? The Stones? The Who? Led Zeppelin? The Animals? Freddie and the Dreamers? (Just kidding about that last one.)
Or do they just seem that way because they’re a large part of our past, and we can’t separate ourselves from the “good old days”?
All opinions welcome, old and young alike…

Most of them were great: inventive blending of various forms of music, blues, country, far eastern styles.
musicianship… people who could actually play at least one instrument well and often several others.
song writing… being able to write about socially relevant issues as well as sex drugs and rock and roll, usually (but not always) without words that couldn’t be used on radio / TV.
Performance… without the corps of “dancers” prerecorded backing vocals, lip syncing, they were able to put on brilliant shows. Some, like Jethro Tull and David Bowie were able to incorporate aspect of theater into these shows, but the performances themselves were actually live.
And, although they had certain rivalry between them they, for the most part admired each other’s work. Unlike among rappers, I never heard of Keith Richards threatening to, or acctually pointing a gun at Pete Townsend, or Robert Plant pulling a knife on John Lennon.
