Did Lucille Ball dislike Annette Funicello?
On The Lucy Show, the episode, Lucy The Star Maker with Frankie Avalon, Lucy and Frankie exchange a joke about Annette Funicello by sarcastically saying “we can’t all be great actors and actresses like Annette Funicello”… Does anyone know why they would make fun of her on the show?
Frankie’s quote above is no indication that Lucy disliked Annette. It was just an “in joke” made for the fun of the guest star. It happened quite frequently when someone guest-starred on a Lucy series, such as a joking Mary Martin reference when Ethel Merman guest-starred on The Lucy Show, and a Yours, Mine & Ours joke when Van Johnson guest-starred on Here’s Lucy.
Annette also worked for a time on the Desilu lot when she was a recurring cast member of The Danny Thomas Show.
