Korobeiniki or Korobushka? What’s the real name for this piece of Russian folk music?
Sometimes known as “The Tetris Tune”, this song originates as a piece of Russian folk music. Various sources online refer to it as either Korobeiniki (or spelling variations there-upon) or Korobushka. Which is the correct name or are they both traditional Russian names?
I think, there is no real name for this song, because it’s a folk song. Both are common.
“Korobeinik” is a person who sells things from a box.
He is singing the first phrase:
My box is full of cotton and brocade..
It’s very popular for Russian folk music to call songs by the first phrase or the first word. That’s why almost every song has several names.
p.s. korob / korobka / korobochka / korobushka – the different names for a box.
