Fly Away

Lets fly, lets fly away…
It is one year on from the political upheaval of November 2008 and the protest that saw the closure of Suvarnabhum, Bangkok international airport. We still aren’t quite sure what it was all about……
For those that came in late….. on the 25th of November 2008 a peaceful protest was staged at Suvarnabhum airport by the yellow shirt-ers, so called because of the decidedly yellowness of their shirts. For nigh on 8 days the international airport in Bangkok was held by a swath of tallow shirt clad protesters as the protested in there yellow shirts. A brief skirmish was attempted at the international airport in Phuket and some glass doors were smashed and, and, and that was all she wrote as far as our fair island of Phuket was concerned. Meanwhile the yellow shirts in Bangkok continued to multiply and going anywhere near the airport without the proper eye and skin protection could result in persistent hour long headaches and a strange sunburn like skin condition brought on by the glare coming off of all that yellow combined.
As the protests grew in number and yellow shirts so to the amount of displaced Farang. As many as possible were syphoned off over land to fly out from Cambodia, Phuket and Singapore and Vietnam. Some government even offering military planes to get its people home and away from this hot bed of err, yellow shirts. As way of compensation The T.A.T {Tourism Authority of Thailand} Placed Farang of varied demographics in some of Bangkok’s priciest accommodations. One of the most enduring of all the pictures to come out of this time of strife and political turmoil, was not as one would expect of a sea of yellow shirts, yet rather the hundreds of Farang draped along the front steps of the Queens Park Hotel. Sure they had free accommodation, it didn’t mean they plan to spend more on one mini-bar beer than their holidays so far. And so while the controversy of the yellow shirts continued to rage, this eclectic Farang menagerie could be seen enjoying their evening beers brought from the 7/11 across the road.
And so we find ourselves a year on, and what have we learned? Uhm…..
