Faure’s Requiem – Odd Orchestration? Why?
Hi. One of the prompts for this research paper I’m writing is to discuss Faure’s Requiem’s odd orchestration, and discuss why this unusual sound is as it is. I’m new to choir/classical music in general, and I have absolutely NO IDEA why the orchestration is “odd”. It sounds pretty normal, why would it be considered as not?
Ideas?

It is unusual to write only one violin part and divided viola and cello parts.
It is more usual to write first and second violin parts and single parts each for the violas and cellos.
It is also unusual to leave the violin section idle for entire movements.
