Bruckner Sym No. 8 Performances?
Anybody have any suggestions on a great performance of Bruckner’s Eighth?
I really like this piece and actually own nine recordings of it including performances conducted by Georg Tintner, Eugen Jochum, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Stanislaw Skrowaczweski, Gunter Wand, Pierre Boulez, Sergiu Celibidache, and two different performances conducted by Karajan. So far I think it’s hard to top the earlier one by Karajan in which he conducted the Preussische Staatskapelle. Unfortunately, other early recordings featuring Karajan are very hard to find.
Always interested in hearing other performances of this piece.
You have already listed the ‘greats’ for Bruckner, However, the Russian conductor Gennadi Rozhdestvensky is a little-known Bruckner expert too. He has recorded all the Bruckner symphonies in all the different versions (eg all three versions of No 3 and all the revisions of all other symphonies) – an accomplishment which is unique as far as I know. Check them out.
