Ein Heldenleben
Looking for powerful classical pieces?
What I mean by that is pieces like:
Tchaikovsky: Symphonies 4 and 5, and 1812 overture
Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition (The Great Gate of Kiev)
Richard Strauss: Ein Heldenleben
Dvorak: “New World” Symphony (No.9)
Mahler: Symphony 5
That is the kind of classical music I like, it doesn’t have to be overwhelmingly powerful, but it has to have an interesting theme to it, like Ein Heldenleben. I like pieces with lots of brass, especially trumpet (because I play it and I’m sort of looking to be inspired), but any good brass part will do. If anyone knows pieces that you think I would like, I would love it if you could give me some suggestions. Thanks.
I assume you are already familiar with Mahler’s next symphony, the 6th and for that matter his whole symphonic output?
Also Tchaikovsky’s 6th and his orchestral fantasy after Dante “Francesca da Rimini”
and of course Strauss “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and though it doesn’t feature any brass his “Metamorphosen” for 23 solo strings is as you say indeed “overwhelmingly powerful”.
Definitely check out Igor Stravinsky,e.g: Rite Of Spring &
Oedipus Rex (opera-oratorio)
Also Alban Berg and his “Three Pieces for Orchestra”, Op.6
Arnold Schoenberg’s symphonic poem “Pelleas and Melisande”
Some more powerful symphonies:
Jean Sibelius – Symphony No.5
Carl Nielsen – Symphony No.5
Anton Bruckner – Symphonies 7 – 9
Edward Elgar – Symphony No.1
Dimitri Shostakovich – Symphonies 4 & 8
Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No.3 “Eroica” (but of course!)
Robert Simpson – Symphony No.9 (for a more contemporary work).
There are innumerable choices.
Adios
Mephisto
P.S
Just remembered another for featuring the trumpet:
Alexander Scriabin’s Poem Of Ecstasy.
