Earl Klugh

What notes are they playing on the guitar?
Wes Montgomery made famous, in jazz circles at least, the plucking and playing of two strings simultaneously. This method gives off a richer sound. Other jazz guitarists such as George Benson , Earl Klugh and Peter White continue this method of playing. Is the theory behind the choice of notes, the root and the 5th ? I tried it and it seems to sound good no matter what notes I play. What’s the theory behind those two notes played by these greats, if it is not the root and 5th?
Wes Montgomery was reknown for playing octaves, a root note & the same note just an octave higher.
For example, pick a note on the 5th string. The octave note is 2 strings away on the 3rd string, and 2 frets up (that is, to the right of the fret space of the note you’re holding down). Try the interval on an acoustic or hollowbody guitar and pluck them simultaneously. They can be stroked with a pick but you have to mute the string in between.

George Benson – Absolutely Live (DTS) $9.75 Toward the beginning of his 90-minute set recorded on May 27, 2000, in Belfast, Ireland, George Benson gushes that he’s always had a fantasy of fronting a big band and covering jazz classics. It becomes increasingly clear, however, that some fantasies should remain just that. There’s no questioning Benson’s contribution to jazz over the years. He’s been hailed as one of the genre’s finest, most ex… |
