Did the Beach Boys ever make & release any recordings where studio musicians were not used?
Carl always said that the famous guitar lick in Surfin’ USA was him, but I have read that it wasn’t. And for sure, Duane Eddy played guitar at Beach Boys sessions years before Pet Sounds.
The only time the Beach Boys did not show up at sessions was when they were on the road touring, and Brian had new ideas to “lay down” on tape. Glen Campbell played guitar, but he was a Beach Boy, anyway. Carole Kaye played bass so that Brian could concentrate on organ & piano.
Also, Ed Carter & Billy Hinsche played guitar and bass at sessions, but they were also Beach Boy sidemen .
David Marks & Carl played everything on the first 4 albums .Al Jardine returned to the band between the 3rd (“Surfer Girl”) & 4th album (“Little Deuce Coupe” ), and he also played some guitar & bass.
Both David Marks & Al Jardine played on ” Catch A Wave” ( Dave on guitar, and Al on bass)
James “Roger” McGuinn (of the Byrds) guest appeared on ” California Dreamin ” . It’s on the ” Made in U.S.A. ” – Greatest Hits CD .
