Rock Band 2 vs Guitar Hero World Tour

Since their first Guitar Hero game release back in November 2005, Activision and RedOctane have been the top players in the music gaming industry, when just 2 years later a sort of new player stepped onto the stage, Rock Band.

The developers of the first 2 Guitar Hero games were Harmonix, but after they released their second Guitar Hero game, they moved onto a new publisher, MTV Games and EA. Once Harmonix had left, new guys Neversoft moved in and started to create a new game, Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock which was released in the later part of 2007. The game seemed to be a great hit, until, later that year the old developers, Harmonix, came back into business with their new game Rock Band. This game featured a whole set of instruments, guitar, drums, bass and mic.

After a year of Rock Band being release, the competition started again because in November 2008, both publishers, Activision and EA both released a new music game into the market, just in time for Christmas. Guitar Hero World Tour from Activision and Rock Band 2 from EA, let the battle begin.

For Guitar Hero, this was a whole new venture for them, a new range of different instruments that they had never made before, but after seeing the end result, it was clear that they hadn’t cut any corners. Their new guitar has a touch sensitive bar to allow finger tapping during song sections, their drums feature 5 pads and a foot peddle, one more than Rock Bands. Aswell as a whole range of shiny new instruments, their game featured a music maker where you could create and share your own songs.

From the Rock Band 2 side, Harmonix have not changed the instrument set up much. Harmonix have made 2 improvements to their new drums, they have changed the foot pedal to metal to make it stronger, they have also changed the drum pads to velocity sensitive, this means as you hit the pads harder, you get a louder sound in game. Apart from those changes to the drums, the rest of their instruments have stayed the same.

On the game side of things, Rock Band don’t have a music maker, however, they do have one thing that Guitar Hero does not; a huge selection of downloadable songs on top of their 80+ song set list. This also gets better, any songs that you have already downloaded for Rock Band 1, are still compatible with Rock Band 2 and appear on the set list when you load up the game. Another advantage is that with Rock Band 2, if you had Rock Band 1, you can transfer all of the Rock Band 1 songs onto the new Rock Band game for a small fee of $5.

Now comes the difficult decision, after each game has had its advantages listed, it comes to deciding which ones you should spend your money on. With Christmas closing in, many people will just be choosing one game rather than both, plus many people will lack the space for 2 sets of instruments.

With both sets of instruments compatible with either game, many people will have to make the decision whether they want a larger setlist, or the new types of features that come with Guitar Hero World Tour.

At the moment it’s hard to tell which game will come out on top to be the master of the music game industry, all I can say is, let the battle of the bands commence.
