Who was the better heel referee, WWF’s Danny Davis or ECW’s Bill Alfonso?
Who was better at drawing fan heat for their heel referee role, Danny Davis or Bill Alfonso? Was it Davis the corrupt WWF referee for disqualifying face wrestlers, accepting bribes and making fast counts or was it Alfonso for being a by-the-book referee and feuding with Tod Gordon? Or where they both equally good in their roles as heel referees?
Danny Davis was a heat-magnet. Davis disqualified the face wrestlers (with little or no reason), made fast pin-fall counts (favoring the heels) and accepted bribes. Danny was a really hated referee. He knew how to work the crowd (and the wrestlers). My favourite classic Danny Davis heel antics, would have to be, where the wrestlers would physically hit him (out of frustration), which would then lead to a “Danny Davis disqualification”.
Bill Alfonso was a heat-machine too, but not to the same extent as Danny Davis. He played “by-the-book” but he still wasn’t as hated as Davis. His feud with Tod Gordon was good; but “Dangerous” Danny Davis teaming with the Hart Foundation was better!
I could go as far as saying that Danny Davis was one of the most hated referees of his time.
