Concerti Grossi
Style of Arcangelo Corelli?
First of all, I am playing 1st violin for Corelli’s Christmas Concerto (Op. 6 No. 8), one of his twelve concerti grossi…it is arranged for a quartet. In this case, which instruments would be ripieno and which would be concertino? Basso continuo? Also, any advice on style for this concerto? Movement by movement? Concerto in general? Thanks a lot!
I’m asking more along the lines of: Which instruments in a string quartet arrangement of a concerto grosso would be concerted concertino/ripieno.
Yes, I have listened to a recording of this…and I really like it verbatim, but I don’t know where I’d find the people for a whole string orchestra or a place to practice…haha
This concerto was written for 1st and 2nd violin soloists, cello soloist, and string orchestra. Most of the orchestra parts are covered in the solo parts, but you will miss a little if you choose to play it as a string quartet. You would use the violin 1 and 2 concertino for your 1st and 2nd violin. You would use the viola ripieno part for you violist and the cello concertino part for your cellist.
Have you listened to a recording? There are plenty of them out there. It’s Corelli so it’s obviously baroque in style. The last movement is the best and the most famous. Some of the movements have breaks between them and some of them don’t.
