Certain Arts At Private Schools
The best private schools out there will actually look at academic achievement there is no doubt about that but what people often forget about is some of the physical and creative aspects of a pupils life and it is here where the importance of things really shows. Some of the creativity that can be found within a child is simply amazing and often not realised.
Independent schools set great store in Music, Art and Drama, often investing significant resources in performance spaces, studios and equipment. A discrete space for Music, with a concert hall, practice rooms, studios and recording equipment can enable pupils both to develop individual expertise, and to play together in ensembles, bands and orchestras, from training level, to grade 8 (and large numbers of peripatetic music staff give individual tuition for the Associated Board music examinations). Another good thing about private schools is that on select ocassions they will bring together all the people from different music likings under one roof for a nice concert for the parents to really enjoy. when it comes to orchestral ensembles they are nearly always accompanied by choirs and things like this, it makes the experience a very good one.
When it comes to the mixing of drama and music they are always linked together because of mass productions that go on. Drama is nearly always on the mainstream agenda and then it pops up again for A level and GCSE’s and these all lead on to great things when it comes to acting careers and such.
Specific scholarships are given in the Creative Arts: particularly in Music, but also in Art and in Drama. These are more usually offered atsenior schools, rather than prep school level and sometimes not until the Independent Sixth Form, and some will offer practical, arts based learning experiences rather remission of fees. There are independent schools which specialise in Music (Chetham’s School in Manchester), in dance (the Royal Ballet School) or the Performing Arts (The Arts Educational Schools), but in all independent schools, specialist or not, there will be a full programme of concerts, plays and arts-based events filling up the termly calendar.
