Pick Up These LPs For The Best Frank Sinatra Library
If you’re a Frank Sinatra fan, you’ll want to hear his music as fans have for 70 years. Fans know that Frank Sinatra vinyl recordings offer the highest quality sound experience. Collectors of classic vinyl recordings know that the charm of Sinatra’s baritone has an added glow on his vinyl LPs. Along with high-quality sound, Sinatra LPs include the large, colorful artwork that was featured on the original recordings. For the collector who wants the highlights of Frank’s career, there are many releases to sift through. The dedicated entertainer recorded a whopping 1,100 songs and dozens of live and studio albums in his nearly six-decade career.
The Chairman’s record output can be best characterized by studying the several periods that define it. Sinatra’s output can be categorized by his career at Reprise, Capitol and Columbia Records. Vinyl discs of his work from all three eras can be found. The most exciting place to jump in is with Sinatra’s Capitol sessions, which many regard as his hottest recordings. Sample some Capitol tracks recorded between the early 1950s and 1960, such as “Come Swing With Me,” “Point of No Return” and “Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely”. Other than producing numerous gold records in this era, Sinatra also landed an Oscar for his role in “From Here to Eternity”. “A Swingin’ Affair,” “Close to You & More” and “Come Fly With Me” are Capitol discs that will give a tasty sampling of Sinatra music from this era.
With dawn of the 1960s, Sinatra started his own label, Reprise Records, and recorded music he selected. Sinatra’s LPs on Capitol were not eclipsed by the Chairman’s releases on Reprise. Although Sinatra remained a guiding force at Reprise, in 1963, he sold the company to Warner Brothers. At this time, Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford, the free-boozing and carousing “Rat Pack,” had the country at their feet. The whole crew did some film acting together when they shot “Oceans 11”. You’ll be smart to seek out albums from this time such as “I Remember Tommy,” and “Sinatra and Strings”.
Records from the first days of the Sinatra catalog include his sessions with Tommy Dorsey. Later, the Columbia years commenced, beginning in 1942. “The Voice of Frank Sinatra” and “Songs by Sinatra” topped the charts then. You can get a good outline of this era’s music on “The Columbia Years 1943-1952: The Complete Recordings”.
With a catalog that includes some of these classic vinyl tracks, you’ll be studying at the “School of Sinatra”. Absorb them at your leisure and you’ll begin to comprehend why jazz musicians have long regarded Sinatra as a musician on par with jazz saxophone great Charlie Parker.
