Chicago Symphony

Is the area near the Loop safe for walking at night?
I will be staying for 2 days in Chicago (some of you may have seen my other questions). I will be staying at a place on Congress Street (close to the Harold Washington library). Is that area safe for walking from the station at night. The reason I’m asking: I want to attend the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (very close to the Art Institute) and I may spend some evening time at the Navy Pier, is it safe to take CTA and/or walk back to the area on Congress street at night? If it’s not safe, I may have to take a taxi cab (which I don’t want).
The closer to Congress you are the more dangerous it gets. You are basically on the dividing line of good and bad. Orchestra Hall is a fine neigbhorhood as is Navy Pier.
