Achieving Your Degree Online Is Easier With Financial Aid
The Commonwealth of Virginia houses some of the oldest and finest institutions of higher learning in the United States. To maintain this reputation, it has come up with a number of scholarships that keeps many of its high school graduates inside the state and continue producing top notch scholars. Reading about scholarship opportunity will prepare you and ease the transition into college.
Also of interest is not all of these scholarships are based on a student’s high school academic record. They also include competitions and financial aid for meritorious service to the community. Some of them are also open to students who also live in nearby states such as Maryland and DC.
To start with, there’s the Lee-Jackson Scholarship. This program is as much an exercise in state pride as it is a test of a high school student’s knowledge of local history. To participate, an entrant must write an original essay on either noted civil war generals Robert E. Lee or Stonewall Jackson. While the award varies depending on the quality of the essay, in 2010 the state handed out 24 students $1,000 each for any four-year program of the student’s choice.
Virginia also participates in the Robert C. Byrd Honor Scholarship. As the Commonwealth administers it, an applicant is chosen by their graduating high school. If the Scholarship’s examination board concurs with the selection, the student receives $1,500 a year for the college of their choice.
More eccentric is the Horatio Algier Scholarship. Like the late period Victorian novels, it is awarded to a student who pulled himself out of “hardship” by his/her bootstraps and made some sort of contribution to society at large. The only other proviso is to graduate with a C or better grade average. Students from Maryland and the District of Columbia are also considered. The recipients are awarded $2,500 a year, again to any school within the nation.
Recognizing the country’s need for more people in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) professions, five of Virginia colleges have come up with an organization called the Space Grant Consortium. This group offers an array of about six or more scholarship packages, ranging anywhere from a basic $1,000 a year to as much as $8,500. It also has a $5,000 fellowship for post-graduates. The only other proviso is the student must go to one the five universities. Staying up to date with the latest facts about scholarship program will be valuable and can uncover more options for assistance.
The Space Consortium isn’t the only one looking towards stocking up on future employees. Virginia’s Department of Transportation is also doing something similar. They have a program in order to give them a steady supply of civil engineers. It will provide as much as $7,000 a year plus a summer internship. It also can be applied to any college offering an accredited degree tract.
Now the preceding is just a sample of the various different merit-based financial aid programs available to Virginia residents. Taking the time to research scholarships and the many programs that are available can help to make college more affordable.
