Bruckner Symphony

Bruckner Symphony
If you had to pick your preference, which symphony of each of the following composers would you choose?

Explain why. Only answer for the composers of which you’ve heard all the symphonies.

Beethoven
Schubert
Schumann
Mendelssohn
Brahms
Dvorak
Tchaikovsky
Bruckner
Mahler
I just realized how ironic it is of me to post such a question – I, who am mildly against setting up a hierarchy when dealing with such high level of art. Well, then apparently my mind hasn’t been decided on this matter.

You can really come up with some doozies, I must say.

Beethoven: “4th” – it still is a basically “classical” symphony; not a fully blown, later Romantic Beethoven; for some strange reason, I’ve developed an aversion to them(waiting for all the TD’s)

Schubert: the “Unfinished”(formerly the “8th”; don’t recall now its renumbering); the first movement contains such pathos; ranks next to Barber’s “Adagio” for me.

Schumann: his “3rd”, the “Rhenish” – it’s so wonderfully German; I love Wagner.

Mendelssohn: real easy for me; the “4th”, the “Italian”; Mendelssohn at his best: exuberant, brilliant orchestration; dynamic, so full of energetic melody.

Brahms: a tough one: love both the 1st and 2nd; if I must choose, then the “1st”. That “doom-like”, tympani, heart-beat reminiscent, beginning – I can’t conceive of any music more dramatic; and the way it grabs your attention from the very first note – WOW. Plus those gorgeous strings of the finale; like a rich chocolate, syrupy Sundae – an harmonic/sonic delight.

Dvorak: “From the New World”(whatever # it’s been assigned now). Dvorak’s by far best effort; a real towering, monumental master-piece; it’s so American, and yet at the same time, still so Slavic.

Tchaikovsky: easiest of all for me; the “4th”. I feel he composed it from the deepest recesses of his soul. The incredible anguish crying out from the 1st movement is painful to hear; but then the brilliant, triumphant finale asserts confidence and hope. I think he still had hopes for happiness while composing this work; even though there can be found inklings in it of his most tragic fate.

Bruckner: not one of my favorite composers – terribly, and I mean TERRIBLY long winded(even worse than Wagner). But I’ll choose the one he dedicated to him, the so-called “Wagner Symphony”, his “#-3″. The only one of his that I really care for; it has beautiful melody, and flows well.

Mahler: he’s next to Bruckner, in being my least favorite(s). I guess I’ll go with his “#-5″; and only because of its “Adagietto” movement. Comparable to the 1st movement of Schubert’s “Unfinished” in its pathos – an extraordinarily, profoundly moving piece of music.
