Why do most Bollywood movie actors seem to be very fair skinned?
My Girlfriend watches quite alot of Bollywood movies. One thing that I have noticed is that most of the stars are always very fair skinned as in milky white skinned! I know that there are fair skinned indians but I dont feel that this acurately represents most of the indian community. I have also heard many of the girls are using a bleaching cream. What is this Madness?!
Indians are very much prone to tanning due to Indian climate and genetic reasons. So the well off Indians who mostly stay indoors are usually fairer than middle/poor class. This is why many times colour of skin is an identifier of status and standard in the society. Just like whites try getting some tan, and blacks try losing some, Indians too strive for a good fair color but in Indian range. Skin colour of Aishwarya Rai/ Riya Sen is a standard for many.
The fondness of fair colour is surely not upto the level of madness. Many successful indian actors are naturally dark skinned like – Bipasha Basu, Kajol, Lara Dutta, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bacchan, John Abraham and many more. Its true that actors use makeup to look white but there are many films where they use makeup to look darker like in Dhoom/Dhoom2, Race, Billu etc. They usually try to look dark if the role is sexy and glamourous. They try to look white where the role is traditional. Some extra white actors like Neil Nitin, Kareena Kapoor, Lisa Ray, Katrina Kaif wear bronzer to look dark in almost every film. Watch some more Bollywood films and you will agree with what I am saying.
