Some Great Artists That Are Under The Radar Screen
A snare hit, thumping bass, a beautiful melody that’s cuts through your ear and infects your heart. We’ve all uttered the next few words. “Who is can that be?” These are a few artists that are extremely talented, but have not gained notoriety. Some of these you know, some you don’t. But you should get to know them all a little bit better. Take note, the music of all of these bands can be located on internet radio.
Nico: Best known for being a drug riddled performer, the fact is that she performed some really terrific music. Listen to “These Days” from the 1960′s album “Chelsea Girls.” With contributions from Jackson Browne and Bob Dylan, the album exudes a warm and elegant tone that is unrivaled by any the came thereafter.
Syd Barrett: Almost every music fan in general knows Pink Floyd. And some of you may be familiar with the group’s leader in its first few years. But Syd Barrett is most noteworthy as a accomplished solo artist. He released two albums in 1970, “The Madcap Laughs” and “Barrett.” They were sparse, some say incomplete, but listen to “Terrapin” (off of the more superior “Madcap” album) and nothing exudes psychedelia better. Every one says Syd is an essential artist, and for very good cause.
The Velvet Underground: Words cannot adequately describe the first time I listened to this artist, they are truly a classic. From they’re artsy, pop minimalist of 1967′s “Velvet Underground and Nico,” (with the famed ‘Banana” album cover from Andy Warhol) to the FM friendly country rock of 1970′s “Loaded,” they really do not disappoint. Although I would stay clear from anything released during the 1990′s reunion. The Velvet Underground is the great American Rock and Roll group America never knew they had, Period.
The Meters: An extremely funky band under the leadership of Art Nellville of The Nellville Brothers. Since they’re inception in the 60′s The Meters have laid down the funk like no other. Listen to “Cissy Strut” and you’ll know. Although the are primarily instrumental, that should not deter you from trying them out.
The Dictators: Having created what many consider to be the first “New York Punk Album”, The Dictators exude a free flowing artsy type of style. They were considered quite abnormal in their era, now we can glance back and appreciate how talented they were. They sometimes came off childish (“I Live for Cars and Girls”) or invasive (“Two Tub Man”) but it was all in good fun. And you can’t deny their biting songs! You will be able to locate ‘The Dictators” on free online music.
The Cramps: Formed by Lux Interior (obvious stage name) in the late 70′s, The Cramps recorded some of the most vibrant rock and roll of the century. Think boogie, punk, and swamp. If it was not for Lux’s tragic death in February of 2009, they would still be performing pleasing all fans, from punk to rockabilly.
