I’m in a blues trio band and I need some help on pedals?
I play bass in a blues trio band and I need to know what kind of pedals would be best
I’ve played in a few blues bands in my time; I don’t think any one of them had a bassist who used pedals at all. A good set of strings, a strong picking or plucking technique (the latter is more common), and a good amp are all that is necessary. If you play in a trio going for a heavier edge (a la Robin Trower or even Jimi Hendrix and his legion of disciples) distortion of some manner might be appropriate, but don’t bother with chorus (makes the pitch center mushy) or delay (makes the attack and release mushy). Reverb occurs naturally to some degree and can always be added in the PA if you’re in the house mix. If your picking/plucking technique is somehow uneven a compressor might be a good idea (usually used by those who slap and pop to even out the discrepancies in attack) but the pedal versions are far inferior to the rack-mounted ones which can be had reasonably these days.
If your amp is lacking tone or “oomph”, save the money you’d spend on pedals for a better amp, which in the long run is a much better investment.
