Blue Skies
How are other photographers getting such radiant blue skies in their photos? I can’t get that result …?
I see photos all the time where these photographers can capture just amazing skies. Really radiant blues and really soft clouds….anyone have any clue?
A UV filter will make no difference at all, they were needed with film on the top of mountains or on a bright beach in Summer, digital is virtually blind to UV.
A Polarizer will, but only at 90° to the Sun, the effect getting less and less as you swing your camera towards or away from that 90°. When you have the Sun in shot or directly behind you the effect is minimal (if any) and you just loose 2 f stops
The problem is the sky is much brighter than the rest of the image and your sensor can only record a limited tonal range, a graduated Neutral Density will even up the disparity no matter what your angle to the Sun. Or you can bracket shots and blend in Photoshop. Finally you can shoot in Raw open one image exposed for the foreground and another exposed for the sky and blend those.
The nearer you are to the Equator the more radiant the sky, at my latitude (UK) the sky’s are more cyan than a true blue even in high Summer, its the same for any other country at this latitude. A Mediterranean blue sky seems to look ‘wrong’ in a picture taken in the UK, the softer skies can define location.
