Billy Cobham

Billy Cobham
Tommy Bolin fans! Does anyone have any stories, opinions, comments, fav tunes, whatever?

Today is the anniversary of his untimely death (December 4, 1976)

It’s difficult to listen to Tommy’s music without wondering what could have been. At age 25, he was just getting his solo stuff wound up.

His legacy includes (but not limited to):
Zephyr
Energy
James Gang
Billy Cobham
Alphonse Mouzon
Moxy
Deep Purple
Tommy Bolin – “Teaser” & “Private Eyes”
Ya all may remember that Zappa passed away on December 4th as well. (93)

Thanks Mike & Darth. You guys rock!

I love His work with Zephyr. The whole first album. The Vinyl version sounds better than the cd which sounds a little shrill. Loved See my people come together off the Going to Colorado LP. I always Thought Candy Givens Was Better Than Janis at the time, Totally underrated. As was Tommy
How about Marching Powder from the Teaser album And his work with Billy Cobham on Spectrum. Classic. Yet Most people say Tommy Who? Oh yeah wasn’t that the guy in T-Rex.

Cobham’s first album as a leader, in 1973–a jazz-rock classic. As on his slightly earlier outings with Mahavishnu Orchestra, Cobham dazzles with rapid-fire pyrotechnics. But, listening carefully, he also does his job of rhythmic support–for this, he calls on his roots in drum-corps and Latin timbale drumming. His compositions here set fire to a stunningly tight band. The scowling, scurrying, ski…

Reissued with sparkling audio and exclusive photographs, this first, 1971, Mahavishnu album certainly vies for the title of the greatest of all jazz-rock recordings. Through spiritually questing flights of intense fury and exquisite quiet, it never loses its sense of inexorable force. Jan Hammer (keyboards), Jerry Goodman (violin), and bassist Rick Laird are completely sympathetic with guitarist J…

Thanks to yet another pristine digital remastering from the archivists at Legacy, we are drawn deeper into the creative vortex of John McLaughlin’s groundbreaking fusion ensemble, captured at the peak of their powers in August 1972. By this time, Mahavishnu were headliners, and by offering greater bass extension, more air and resolution, and a clearer sense of distinction between the component par…

Can a couple of drums have a conversation? Yes, when they are played by two all-star drummers like Billy Cobham & Louie Bellson. The Louie Bellson Big Band play swinging melodic riffs while the two performers face each other and alternate in virtuosity, using all kinds of tones from the “whispering” to the fortissimo. BILLY COMHAM: A true drumming superstar, his credits include performances on ov…
