How do we know the pre-big bang universe was a tiny particle?
What if the big bang was a result of two massive objects colliding into each other?

Actually we don’t know what the pre-big bang universe was. All our theories start from a certain time after the Bang, about 10 to the power of minus 47 seconds later. Our universe, as we know, is literally moved by four fundamental forces, which are the electromagnetic force, the weak nuclear force, the strong nuclear force and gravity. Gravity’s the weakest one. Now, why can’t we describe the events preceding Big Bang? Because we should think gravity as much strong as the other forces, and there’s no theory having this concept in it. There are two fundamental theories, General Relativity by Albert Einstein which describes Gravity, and Quantum Theory (to which many important science people have contributed), which is about the other three forces. The two theory are in contrast. Scentists are nowadays trying to unify them in a single one called ‘Quantum Gravity’, although the task’s not easy at all. Maybe once we have it we’ll be able to describe universe as it was before Big Bang, that means the time when the four forces were all equal. So yes, we can imagine it was a tiny particle, we can think it as empty space. We could even say the Big Bang never happened, maybe as you say two massive objects collided and generated everything. We can think about anything, but it’d be just guessing.
