if you were going to buy 1 cd of string quartets, which would you buy: beethoven, shubert, brahms, or mozart.?

You should listen to some samples online to see what kind of music you like. Youtube should have many samples of sometimes the whole work (but still pay for a cd, definitely). If not, amazon has shorter samples to give you an idea of how the music sounds.

The composers you listed all wrote famous string quartets. But also consider Dvoräk, Debussy, Ravel, and Dmitri Shostakovich.
