‘All You Can Eats’ Wreck Havoc On Your Waistline
All you Can Eat was a term that came about in 1970s USA when restauranters came up with a marketing idea that centred around allowing dinners to eat as much as they wanted, for a set price. Although a large quantity of food had to be brought and produced, chains calculated that each customers payment more than recouped for the losses made in buying.
So why are All you Can Eat establishments so risky? The brain plays a huge part in regulating hunger and our state of fullness can often irrelevant in determining how much we want to eat. If you have a small plate of food, you will eat it all and no doubt feel full shortly after, the same is true of a large plate, but you have eaten more. This is because the human brain is geared towards eating whenever the opportunity arises.
The human brain is also programmed to seek out variety, bad news if you’re at an all you can eat restaurant. Because we are ware that different colours shapes and textures of food provide different nutritional profiles, our brain encourages us to eat for variety, meaning when faced with trays of different food, we want it all.
Couple this with the fact that all you can eat places aren’t usually proprietors of the healthiest cuisine, and you have a recipe of weight gain.
