Bad Manners

Is it bad manners to strike up a conversation with someone on a bus?
I was sitting on a bus and starting talking to a women who was sitting next to me. She looked at me with cold eyes and a hostile tone and said, why are you talking to me, you are invading my privacy and showing bad manners” I asked her why small talk was bad manners and she said that it is rude to expect strangers to talk to you and she will only talk to people who have been introduced to her by friends or at a formal social or business event.
Is she right that we should not attempt to talk to someone who is not part of a formal social introduction?
I agree that it was rude of this woman to respond in a nasty tone and accuse you openly of being rude. However, her technical point — that we shouldn’t force conversation on people we don’t know — was correct. Of course, I wasn’t there, so I don’t know if that’s what you were really doing.
Another point: How long was the bus trip? On a day-long Greyhound trip, it’s certainly okay to introduce yourself and attempt conversation. On a local bus, less so. And in all cases, you need to be sensitive to whether they’re interested in talking or not.
