How to Care For Your Baby’s Brain: From Mozart To Flat Head Syndrome

A baby’s head is soft and round. The light peach fuzz on it makes it lovely to stroke. You want to preserve the roundness of your baby’s head and grow his brain to make him the smartest little boy in his class. With that in mind, here are some tips on how to keep your baby’s brain growing large.

1. Talk: Your baby needs to hear your voice in order to learn how to speak. A baby’s brain is like a sponge, the more it absorbs the bigger it will be. Slow it down, exaggerate the syllables, and draw out vowels. Questions and the tone associated with them are very valuable. And sometimes your baby needs more than nursery rhymes; while Shakespeare may not make sense to your baby, it doesn’t mean that it will be lost on him. Even reading aloud magazines or the book you are reading is an important way to develop a relationship with language.

2. Touch: Stroke your baby’s head and rub his tummy. This will allow for a higher emotional IQ. You should always be ready to attend to your baby’s needs. Whenever he cries, coddle and dandle him so that he knows you are there for him. This response will make you more sensitive to his needs and will give him the positive reinforcement he needs when he is older.

3. Sing: Baby songs like “London Bridge” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider” are classics that your toddler can sing along to. But even humming and singing songs when baby is falling asleep can help reinforce rhythms and patterns. When you leave the nursery play classical music, like Bach, Mozart, Chopin, or Brahms to relax and organize his mind.

4. Treat Every Activity Like It Matters: Bath time is great for teaching your baby about different textures, like water, soap, and towels. Playing outside in the rain is a great way to understand the weather and the physics of water. There are hundreds of daily routines that will allow your child to learn and absorb information.

5. Breastfeed: If you are breastfeeding, you tend to touch and cradle your baby more often than if you fed him with a bottle. Many studies show that breastfed babies are smarter, due to hundreds of essential nutrients not found in formula.

6. Problems: If your baby tends to sleep the same way in his crib, has bumps or bulges on his head, or begins to have facial asymmetry, such as an ear higher than the other, it’s important to see your pediatrician. Your baby could be showing symptoms of flat head syndrome, which is correctable with a baby helmet, but needs to be addressed immediately. Positional plagiocephaly, brachycephaly, and craniosynostosis are serious conditions.

The more time you spend with your baby, the smarter he will be. You will become more attuned to each other, which will help your child learn faster what is right and good.
