Baby Boomer Credits Home And Family
I have noticed that my baby boomer siblings and friends share a certain outlook on life. We have all lived long enough to appreciate that we do not live our lives on mountain peaks. What does that mean? It means that we have been alive long enough to understand that everything will not always be going our way.
Life will present challenges at work and at home. Sometimes we are on top of everything that comes our way. Sometimes it seems like nothing else can go wrong. When we hit those points we have enough experience to realize that it is temporary. We will rebound. We will be back up on top again.
We climb the mountain with growing anticipation at reaching the summit. We arrive to be thrilled by our sense of accomplishment and the view. The world lays at our feet. We can do anything. Then we start to hike down. Into the shadows that fill the valley below and back to our routines.
We know there will be another project, event or challenge to hold our interest and elevate us. In the meantime, we add some more pictures to the family photo album and get into our normal routines. A high point is gauged differently by each of us. Have we been focused on home storage solutions during our remodel? Is the convection oven or new black decker food processor the ultimate addition to our kitchen?
As we aged we changed. Our values came into focus about the time parenthood arrived. There is a tendency to step away from the joy of new appliances, a backyard swimming pool, and stop using credit to finance our lives. We began to look ahead and we were struck by the riches that are contained in our home and family.
We did not wait to purchase a recreational vehicle at retirement age. We wanted one now and imagined our wonderful vacation adventures. We only used it twice and sold it. We used the money to fly the entire tribe to several fantastic spots. We collected our memories and stories that we will share forever.
We baby boomers are getting older and have learned to value our relationships more than money. Promotions at work are nearly as important as promoting values in our children. Material possessions are not as important as possessing shared experiences with our family. We have found discovered that furnishing our home with family is our best investment.
