Looking for an affordable vinyl turntable?

I have recently started collecting old vinyl (mostly late 70s/80s so far) from charity/secondhand shops. Eventually, once I’ve collected a fair bit, I’m going to want some means of playing them.

So I ask, what should I look for if I want a turntable that:
> Doesn’t sound like a tin can (i.e. not cheap and nasty – doesn’t have to be audiophile quality, but at least has to sound good.)
> Won’t damage my vinyl
> Can be connected to a set of headphones or speakers without the need for some kind of external pre-amp/receiver.

I don’t have an existing stereo set-up and don’t want to spend too much money at this point. My preferred price range is £100 or lower (can go higher, maybe even up to £200 but would rather not).

With my price range, I realise I may end up having to buy secondhand equipment – if so, where should I look?
I’m not a poser so I’m not concerned with how stylish/trendy the turntable looks ;)

Thanks in advance.

The best turntable you can buy in your price range is the Pro-Ject “Essential” model, which you can find for around £150. It’s very highly regarded, as are all the Pro-Ject range.

Don’t forget, you will need an amplifier with a phono stage, plus speakers (sorry if that’s obvious to you, but many people don’t realise they need them, in this digital age…).
