How Gospel Is Sung

If you have ever gotten the opportunity to listen to Andre Crouch and Mahalia Jackson sing gospel songs, you probably know how a seraphim sings her praises to God. Now, gospel is a genre you also want to sing.

If gospel songs can be so potent, why do they fall flat when the typical church choir tries them? There are selected strategies which you can adopt if you want to be a good gospel singer.

Gospel music became well-liked among black sprituals in the southern part of America during the 19th century. That time, Christian religion was taught to uneducated African slaves through songs.

There’s a leader who sings one line while the group sings yet another, in call-and-response singing. There is usually a refrain or chorus that is sung by everyone. The structure is simple, the lyrics repetitive, and the emotion heartfelt.

Compare that to the classic hymns by such writers as Charles Wesley or Isaac Watts. Though stunning, the lyric is not repetitive and you will find multiple verses. A person should be able to read the lyrics to sing! Far too many choirs and congregations deliver them with little to no emotion. In several churches, there is a general perception that too much feeling is inappropriate or unseemly.

Faith is celebrated through singing, that’s why the majority of evangelical songs are very mild But vocal technique for singing evangelical songs is still needed. Evangelical singing is as challenging as singing opera.

Singing gospel well requires a powerful voice and very strong breath support. You have to sing well and emote well. You are revealing a story, and to deliver it effectively you need to feel it and believe it yourself. Your listeners have to be stirred by emotions.

Excellent breathing must be practiced if you want to sing gospel. The Fontanelli exercise is one great way to develop an excellent gospel singing technique. Breathe in for 4 seconds and then breathe out for another 4 seconds. Fully expand your midriff while inhaling and maintain the same facial expression while exhaling.

When you are conversant in the technique, use a 5-count or 6-count strategy. When you work up to seven or eight, add a hold phase. Hold your midriff to monitor the expansion and make sure you are not straining.

Next comes dynamics. A great workout for dynamics is often called messa di voce (Italian for “placement of the voice”). Sing a pitch that you can sing comfortably. While sustaining the pitch, start very softly and slowly get louder, then slowly get softer again.

To work on expression, look at the text of your song. Have an image inside your mind that fully expresses the song. Observe videos of gospel concerts to have a thought on how to make the listeners go wild with emotion.

Make certain you pronounce the terms well when music evangelical songs. Remember, it arose as a method to teach individuals who could not read, so they had to be ready to comprehend the text. Articulate the words properly. Sing the song like it’s coming from your heart.
