Three fantastic tube guitar amplifiers for tone merchants
To generate guitar amplification back in the middle of last century, guitar amplifiers used valves (frequently referred to as tubes) to produce the power they needed.
These tubes are what you used to see in old gramophones from the 1950 through to late 1960 era, before transistors were developed which then lead to solid state circuitry being incorporated in amplifiers in order to produce amplification.
Today of course most guitar amplifiers depend exclusively on solid state circuits for sound volume.
The reason why is because solid state is cheap to produce, and for newbie musicians it enables them to start with a guitar amp that doesn’t break the bank.
These consumer type entry level guitar amplifiers do have a weakness though in that the sound they produce can be thin and a little mass produced – even though you get a lot of bonus features thrown in such as crazy effects and distortions.
With a solid state amp the sound is of course manufactured, and hence there has been a subsequent movement back towards the vintage style guitar amplifier, powered using tubes (valves) which deliver a warmer and fuller analog sound – which in one word is called tone.
All guitarists worth their salt will at one time or another attempt to find and develop their own sound, their own tone so to speak and most will head down this track by searching out and acquiring a tube based amp.
An awesome initial tube amplifier would be the Vox ac15 amp. Not only is it easy to move around being a single speaker 15 watt valve amplifier, but it can produce enough volume to be able to be heard along with the rest of a small group. If you are gigging solo this Vox ac15 is awesome for jazz and blues guitarists, and should be groovy with a semi-hollow guitar. 15 watts of tube power is equivalent to like 40-50 watts of solid state amp so don’t be put off by the power rating, it is deceptive.
Most valve amplifiers you need to have turned up to around 60-75% of their volume as this is normally there most efficient range where they generate the warmest tones.
Next in the lineup is another classic amp, this time the Vox ac30 producing 30 watts of tube grunt. These Vox tube amps use the same design as when they were first produced and they were often seen amongst the British band invasion of the ’60’s.
In essence the Vox ac30 is a reissue of a model released more than 45 years ago – a testament to the fact that great amps never die.
Next on the lineup is the Orange Rockerverb 50, in effect a head and cabinet unit massaged into a tube combo amp with tons of power yet still light enough to move it around single handedly.
This amplifier is one of a range of Orange tube amplifiers used by many famous artists such as Kid Rock, and Jimmy Page. It is very versatile and can be used for blues, rock, and pop. Great for creating your own tone either on stage or in the studio.
