Allman Brothers

Allman Brothers
What is your favorite Allman Brothers song?

I’m going to see them tomorrow night (technically it’s tonight), and I was just wondering. They have so many good ones it’s hard for me to decide, but if I had to, I’d probably say No One To Run With. For some reason that one for me just stands out above the rest.

My exposure to the Allman Brothers came in a roundabout way.

I first heard Midnight Rider and Don’t Keep Me Wondering on a Buddy Miles LP called Message To The People. And he did GREAT versions of both.

Then I heard an Hour Glass track called Cast Off All My Fears on an Hour Glass album that I listened to in a record store in Germany where I would often spend entire days sitting in one of their booths just listening to any album in the store that caught my eye for some reason.

Finally I heard the Allman Brothers proper on a triple live album called The First Great Rock Festivals Of The Seventies – and album that to this day if I see it used in great shape for under 10 dollars I will buy it just to hang on to until I find somebody who has a record players and has never heard it that I think will appreciate it. Yes it’s THAT good an album. And never out on cd either. That album had Statesboro Blues and a highly edited version of Whipping Post on it from the Atlanta Pop Festival.

A while after that I got my first Allmans lp which was Eat A Peach (on which I really liked Ain’t Wasting Time No More a lot, but the rest did’nt do all that much for me). And a little later Brothers and Sisters, which I did not like much at all. But I gave them one more shot with the Fillmore double album and LOVED that album. And then I eventually got all their other albums.

I nowadays own the Dreams box because it’s a really great box with everything I’d want by them on it more or less, the Fillmore double and Eat A Peach (mainly because they are both Quad LP’s and I have a big collection of quad albums).

I’d say to this day my faves by them are still:

Cast Off All My Fears (ok technically not an A-Bros song but still my fave)

Midnight Rider

Don’t Keep Me Wondering (still LOVE the Buddy Miles versions of both of these more than the Allman’s versions though)

Whippin’ Post (especially that 5 minute edit on that triple album)

Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More

So after all these years the songs I heard by them first are still my favorites!

P.S. – I still think Dickey was a MUCH better and more interesting guitar player than Duane ever was.

There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpasse…
